Série A (Brasil)

Serie A

Campeonato Brasileiro Série A holds a major place in the sporting life of Brazil and is often mentioned among the strongest football leagues in the world. In its current format, the competition features 20 clubs playing in a double round-robin system across 38 matchdays. Introduced in 2003, this structure brought greater clarity and consistency, while keeping the title race intense through the season.

The history of the championship is closely linked with the wider rise of Brazilian football. For decades, the sport was organised mainly through state-level competitions, which shaped the character of local clubs. The first steps toward a national league came through Taça Brasil and Torneio Roberto Gomes Pedrosa. Those tournaments gradually opened the way for the modern Série A, launched in 1971.

The move to a unified national system marked a new phase for football in the country. From that point, the championship operated under the Brazilian Football Confederation and became the main route for deciding Brazilian representatives in international club competitions. For readers in India, it can be viewed as the central domestic competition in Brazilian football, similar to how top national leagues define the season in other major football markets.

Team

CR Flamengo

CR Flamengo

Clube de Regatas do Flamengo is a multi-sport club from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, best known for its professional football team. The organisation is closely linked to the Flamengo and Gávea districts, with its origins tracing back to a local rowing community. Over time, different sporting sections were added to the original structure, expanding the club’s overall activities.

The club was founded on 17 November 1895 as a rowing organisation under the name Grupo de Regatas do Flamengo before later adopting its current identity. The football department was created on 24 December 1911, when a group of players left Fluminense and joined the club. From that point, organised football became part of Flamengo’s existing multi-sport structure.

Flamengo’s visual identity is built around its red and black colours, which replaced the blue and gold combination used in earlier years. The traditional football kit features red-and-black stripes with white shorts and matching socks, while an all-white away kit is used in certain situations. The club also uses different versions of its crest, including the CRF monogram, while the vulture (urubu) gradually became one of Flamengo’s most recognisable symbols and mascots.

Coritiba Foot Ball Club

Coritiba Foot Ball Club

Coritiba Foot Ball Club was founded on 12 October 1909 in Curitiba and is closely linked to the early development of football in the state of Paraná. Its origins trace back to German immigrants involved with Clube Ginástico Teuto-Brasileiro Turnverein. Within that organisation, a football section was formed and later separated to operate as an independent club.

From its foundation, Coritiba developed in the state capital, a region in southern Brazil strongly influenced by European immigration. This environment remained an important backdrop to the club’s growth as it became involved in the early formation of football structures in Paraná. Over time, Coritiba established itself as one of the stable organisations in regional football and maintained long-standing local rivalries.

The club’s identity is built around the green-and-white colour combination associated with the symbolism of the state. The crest features the initials CFC inside a green sphere along with elements inspired by the araucaria tree. In addition to football, Coritiba has also expanded into other activities, including American football through Coritiba Crocodiles, along with youth development programmes and international exchange initiatives.
