The Campeonato Brasileiro Série A is the top tier of professional football in Brazil and one of the leading domestic leagues in South America. Established in its modern form in 1971, the competition features twenty clubs competing in a double round-robin format. Over time, it has become closely associated with Brazil’s footballing identity, combining technical quality with a strong emotional connection to supporters.

Historically, Brazilian football was structured primarily around state championships rather than a unified national league. As infrastructure and national media coverage developed, the need for a country-wide competition became increasingly evident. In 1959, the Taça Brasil was introduced, laying the groundwork for a national championship structure. Following further organisational adjustments, a full double round-robin system was implemented in 2003 and remains in place today.

Série A is administered by the Brazilian Football Confederation and operates under established professional regulations. The highest-placed teams qualify for South America’s principal club competitions, including the Copa Libertadores and Copa Sudamericana, while the bottom four clubs are relegated to the second division. This framework ensures sustained competitive pressure throughout the season.

Grêmio Foot-Ball Porto Alegrense

Grêmio Foot-Ball Porto Alegrense was founded on 15 September 1903 in Porto Alegre, at a time when interest in football was increasing in the city. Its creation followed an exhibition match organised by Sport Club Rio Grande, which encouraged the development of organised football activity. In its early years, the club grew in an environment influenced by the German community in Rio Grande do Sul.

The team competes in Campeonato Brasileiro Série A and Campeonato Gaúcho, which form the core of its sporting activity. Over time, it has built a broad supporter base, while its rivalry with Sport Club Internacional has become a consistent feature of the local football scene. Matches between the two sides are known as the “Grenal”.

The club maintains a clearly recognisable identity based on the colours blue, black and white. These are reflected in the traditional vertically striped kit and underpin the designation “Tricolor”, widely used as a short name.

Sport Club Corinthians Paulista is a sports club based in São Paulo, most commonly known as Corinthians. It operates across several disciplines, with football forming its main profile and public presence.

The club’s identity is built around a set of recognisable elements. Black and white were established early as the main colours, replacing the initial cream tone. In 1954, a black kit with thin white lines was introduced as an alternative. The crest combines a shield with the São Paulo state flag, along with oars and an anchor — a reference to early activities beyond football.

Corinthians is based in the Tatuapé area and operates as a club association. Alongside football, it also includes other sports such as futsal, basketball, volleyball and rowing, broadening the scope of its activity across different sporting contexts.
