Campeonato Brasileiro Série A

The Campeonato Brasileiro Série A is the top tier of professional football in Brazil and one of the leading domestic leagues in South America. Established in its modern form in 1971, the competition features twenty clubs competing in a double round-robin format. Over time, it has become closely associated with Brazil’s footballing identity, combining technical quality with a strong emotional connection to supporters.
Historically, Brazilian football was structured primarily around state championships rather than a unified national league. As infrastructure and national media coverage developed, the need for a country-wide competition became increasingly evident. In 1959, the Taça Brasil was introduced, laying the groundwork for a national championship structure. Following further organisational adjustments, a full double round-robin system was implemented in 2003 and remains in place today.
Série A is administered by the Brazilian Football Confederation and operates under established professional regulations. The highest-placed teams qualify for South America’s principal club competitions, including the Copa Libertadores and Copa Sudamericana, while the bottom four clubs are relegated to the second division. This framework ensures sustained competitive pressure throughout the season.
Beyond its sporting function, the league also carries cultural significance. Matches in Série A regularly attract substantial crowds, and stadium atmospheres form a defining part of Brazil’s football environment. The sport occupies a central place in public life and remains closely intertwined with the country’s national identity.
The Campeonato Brasileiro Série A stands as a consolidated national championship that balances historical tradition with contemporary governance. It continues to play a pivotal role in the development of professional football in Brazil and in shaping the broader sporting landscape of the country.
Esporte Clube Bahia

Football in Salvador went through a transition in the early 1930s when two local clubs ceased their activities. At that point, some of their players came together to form Esporte Clube Bahia, which entered organised competition from 1 January 1931. The new team emerged as a continuation of an existing sporting presence in the city.
The club competes in both Brazil’s national league system and the Bahia state championship, maintaining a regular competitive schedule at regional and wider levels. Salvador, as the state capital, is one of the main cities in northeastern Brazil, with a well-established cultural and historical background.
Home matches are played at Arena Fonte Nova. Built on the site of the former Fonte Nova ground, it forms part of the infrastructure developed for the 2014 World Cup.
Botafogo de Futebol e Regatas

The origins of Botafogo de Futebol e Regatas are linked to the merger of two separate organisations that initially developed different sports. After a period of independent activity, they combined in 1942 to form a single structure with a broader range of activities. This merger established the basis for the club’s modern development and defines its overall scope.
The club is based in the Botafogo district of Rio de Janeiro, with its operations extending to other parts of the city. Part of its infrastructure is located in Praia de Botafogo and Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas, associated with water sports, as well as in Engenho de Dentro, where football activities are carried out. This distribution allows the use of specialised facilities across different disciplines.
In addition to football, the club is involved in sports such as basketball, volleyball, water polo and rowing. It maintains training programmes, preparation facilities and bases linked to water sports, reflecting both its origins and its subsequent development.
